Reggie Yates Teen Gangs observations by Latoya

Reggie Yates Teen Gangs

The documentary was a very informative and personal investigative journalist inspired documentary. It was intimately narrated by Reggie Yates. Yates is a well-known television presenter who grew up in a neighbourhood much like the one that the contributors live in. The contributors give him exclusive access into their lives and their journeys after leaving some of London’s toughest gangs, although some never leave. A striking introduction into the documentary sets the tone of this personal journey. Images of the London riots overlapped with images of Reggie walking around council estates. The documentary inspired some interesting shots of actuality that we can use in our documentary, which includes shots of guys in hoods, city shots, bus shots, driving shots, CCTV footage, shots in the dark, pull focusing and time lapses. Overlaying archive audio over footage is also an effective technique that we could use.
The presenting style in this documentary was very personal. Reggie connects with his contributors on a deep level.  He sits in the same bed, eats dinner with their family, prays with the pastor, follows a contributor to the gym and chills with them in their living room. Reggie’s actions that were determined by the producer demonstrate the friendly relationships that he established. Like a big brother, he gives them advice, gives them money for food and calls them to meet. They promise that they will stay on the straight and narrow for Reggie. The presenting style is also something we could emulate. The documentary answers vital questions about people’s environments, why people enter gangs and how hard it is to leave the lifestyle
